My characters’ lives are hell. I cackle—yeah, I know, gotta watch the cackling—as the trauma rains down. But I give them a whole world of amazing people to make up for it. Thoughtless, honorable, sweet, confrontational, mixed-up, maybe-not-entirely-sane people. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes brave, and sometimes both at once.
